Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA

Bangor, Maine

Project Scope

The Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA is a new, approximately 82,000-square-foot community recreation facility currently under construction in Bangor, Maine. The project will replace the former YMCA and expand access to health, wellness, and community programming for the greater Bangor region. The facility will include two pools, a full-court gymnasium, an indoor track, expanded childcare spaces, and flexible areas to support a wide range of community uses.

Haley Ward provided site civil design and permitting services for the project, including the design of all site utilities, parking areas, pedestrian circulation, and athletic field improvements. The site’s significant grade changes required careful coordination to support accessibility, safe circulation, and efficient stormwater management while integrating the facility into the surrounding neighborhood.

The project also required close collaboration with the City of Bangor to accommodate the removal of an existing city street and the reconfiguration of public infrastructure. Haley Ward worked with municipal partners to redesign affected public systems, ensuring continued functionality while creating space for the new development and maintaining access to the adjacent park.

Haley Ward continues to support the project through construction administration as needed. When complete, the new Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA will serve as a modern, inclusive hub for recreation and community connection, representing a long-term investment in the health and vitality of Bangor.
