United Insurance – Portland Lobby Renovation
Portland, Maine
Project Scope
Haley Ward provided interior design services for the renovation of United Insurance’s lobby and reception space at 470 Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine, supporting the company’s expansion into the first floor of its existing building. United Insurance had outgrown its second- and third-floor offices and sought a refreshed, modern lobby that reflected its culture, growth, and urban Portland location while creating a welcoming first impression for clients and visitors.
The project began in November 2024 while demolition was already underway, requiring rapid design decision-making and close coordination with the client and contractor to maintain project momentum. Haley Ward was engaged to finalize finishes and develop a cohesive design direction for the lobby and reception area under an accelerated schedule.
A finish presentation was delivered in December 2024, followed by the design of a custom millwork reception desk in early January 2025. The custom desk solution addressed the client’s operational needs while elevating the overall design. United Insurance provides sit-stand desks for employees, which limited off-the-shelf reception options and risked compromising the visual impact of the space. Haley Ward guided the client toward a custom millwork design that concealed the sit-stand functionality while delivering a clean, polished aesthetic.
The completed design creates a professional and welcoming environment, featuring a custom millwork reception desk and slat wall that anchor the space and reinforce the brand experience from the moment visitors enter. Furniture selections and material finishes were coordinated to support durability, comfort, and a modern look appropriate for a client-facing setting.
Despite a compressed schedule, finish selections and reception design were finalized in early January to allow materials to be ordered in February and installed beginning in March. Haley Ward’s responsiveness and clear communication helped keep the project moving forward, with the bulk of construction completed by early May.
