Swan Lake State Park Improvements

Swanville, Maine

Project Scope

Haley Ward provided multidisciplinary engineering and environmental services for a comprehensive project at Swan Lake State Park in Swanville, Maine. The effort brought together multiple service lines within the firm to address infrastructure needs, enhance visitor amenities, and support the long-term usability of the park facilities.

The focal point of the project was the design of a new bathhouse to better serve park visitors. This work included upgrades to the water infrastructure throughout the park to support the new facility. Designing with the park’s seasonal operations in mind presented a unique challenge: the bath house is intended to be winterized and shut down each off-season. The Haley Ward team developed practical design solutions that simplify draining and shutdown procedures for park maintenance staff.

Attention was also given to aesthetics and visitor comfort. Although utilitarian in function, the bath house design was developed to complement the “state park” setting. The building fits the site’s natural surroundings and offers a more welcoming and usable space for all visitors.

Sanitary wastewater disposal required creative problem-solving due to lot coverage and setback limitations. Haley Ward’s municipal infrastructure team collaborated with a Licensed Soil Evaluator to integrate a FujiClean proprietary treatment system. This approach allowed for a significantly reduced leach field footprint while still meeting regulatory requirements.

The Swan Lake State Park project highlights Haley Ward’s ability to deliver comprehensive solutions through seamless collaboration across multiple disciplines. Our team provided a full range of services, including natural resource investigations, civil site design, environmental permitting, building design (architecture, structural, and MEP), and construction administration. By bringing together expertise from across the company, Haley Ward was able to navigate complex project requirements and deliver a successful outcome that met the client’s goals while enhancing the visitor experience.
