Park Loop Overlook Road at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in northern Penobscot County, Maine
Project Scope
Haley Ward provided engineering and site design services for improvements to the Park Loop Overlook Road within Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, transforming an informal and inefficient access route into a more intentional and user-friendly experience.
The existing road originated as a former logging trail and led to an overlook with views of Mount Katahdin. While the destination offered a compelling view, the approach presented several challenges. The roadway followed a steep grade, terminated in a poorly organized parking area, and allowed vehicles to encroach directly on the overlook, diminishing the overall visitor experience, and jeopardized visitor safety.
The project focused on redefining how visitors access and experience the site. The roadway was realigned to stop short of the overlook, where a new, clearly defined parking area was constructed. This approach improved traffic flow and expanded parking capacity while creating a more intuitive layout for visitors. Wheel stops were incorporated to guide parking behavior and reinforce organization within the lot.
By shifting vehicle access away from the overlook, the design prioritizes a pedestrian-first experience. Visitors now approach the viewpoint on foot, creating a more deliberate and impactful first exposure to the landscape.
Accessibility was a key consideration throughout the project. The site was carefully graded to provide ADA-compliant access from the parking area to both the overlook and the existing pit privy.
Working with the natural topography, the design leverages the site’s existing conditions to create a solution that feels both functional and appropriate to its setting. The result is a more organized, accessible, and intentional experience that enhances access to one of the monument’s most notable views while preserving its character.
