Project Scope
COMPLETE SITE DEMOLITION AND REDEVELOPMENT
Early in 2018, B.I.G. ARTS (Barrier Island Group for the Arts, Inc. [bigarts.org]) decided to renovate the existing facility on Sanibel Island including re-paving of the parking lot; however, through the architectural design process, the scope expanded dramatically to include complete site demolition and redevelopment. This project was privately funded but publicly owned as part of the “Civic Core” of Sanibel Island, flanked by the Historical Village and City Hall.
AGGRESSIVE SCHEDULE SO THE SHOWS COULD GO ON
Along with protected native trees on site, this context set the stage for a uniquely multi-stakeholder design on a very aggressive construction schedule, with booked performances the day before demolition and the weekend after projected completion date. The scope of the project included demolition and replacement of existing 410-seat performance hall, classrooms, and associated two acres of site development, with new parking, sidewalks, a shared use path, and outdoor plaza. Historical preservation and natural resource conservation requirements defined the course for the redevelopment and complex, undocumented, and intermingled utilities posed several significant design and construction challenges
