Meet Haley Ward Survey Technician Nick Craig, LSIT
National Surveyors Week 2023
In honor of National Surveyor’s Week, we would like to introduce you to one of the members of our team- Nick Craig!
Nick grew up in Ashland, Maine and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono with a bachelor’s degree in survey engineering technology.
Nick joined Haley Ward in 2012 as a Survey Technician. In this role, he works on a wide variety of projects, including boundary surveys, topographic and infrastructure data, and construction layouts. His favorite is boundary surveys, which establish the boundaries of a piece of property using both recorded legal documents, and physical inspection. “It’s kind of like a scavenger hunt.” he said, “You have to use historical data and find the most likely corners”.
One of Nick’s favorite projects he worked on at Haley Ward was the Colby College Recreation Facility. This very large project included full surveying services including construction layout, assisting with quality control, and setting site control for subcontractors.
Most recently, Nick has been spending a lot of time working at Northern Light Acadia Hospital, where our team is providing survey services for a large hospital expansion.
When asked what he likes most about his job at Haley Ward, Nick said “Practically every day I get to do something different. One day I might be doing boundary surveys in the woods, and the next I am working with engineers and contractors on a big construction project. On top of that I get to travel and see a lot of really cool places across the state that I wouldn’t get to see if I sat in an office all day.”
Nick also appreciates the resources and technology that he has access to working for a large company like Haley Ward. “The technology is always changing and the company makes sure that we have what we need to do a great job and help our clients to the best of our ability”.
When Nick isn’t working, he likes to spend time with his friends and family, enjoying the great outdoors, and especially fishing in the Penobscot River. Know any great fishing spots that Nick should check out this year? Be sure to drop it in the comments below.
