Meet Haley Ward Interior Designer Katy King, NCIDQ!

International Women’s Day March 8, 2023

March 8th is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the achievements of women around the world. Our team at Haley Ward is filled with many amazing, accomplished female employee-owners. Today we would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of them.

Meet Haley Ward’s Interior Designer, Katy King, NCIDQ!

Katy joined the Haley Ward team last April after moving to Maine from Pensacola, Florida. Katy grew up in Austin, Texas and always enjoyed art, and exploring different mediums and materials. When she was young, she would take clippings from Pottery Barn Kids Magazines and attach them to sketches of floor plans she designed for children’s spaces. While in high school and college, Katy worked for her neighbor, Jennifer, who is an Interior Designer, to renovate U.S. Air Force and Navy base lodging, dining, and MWR (moral, welfare, and recreation) facilities. Katy helped put together design presentations, drafted floor plans, created furniture budgets, and maintained the sample library under Jennifer’s direction. This job provided Katy with some amazing hands-on experience that solidified her desire to pursue a career as an Interior Designer. “I was able to see that the design of spaces can positively impact how people live and work and having a small hand in that felt personally fulfilling to me.” After high school, Katy attended Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design.

Before coming to Haley Ward, Katy worked for a design firm based out of Dallas, Texas that specialized in new construction multi-family design. With previous experience working with multi-family and residential renovations, and additions, Katy built upon her growing knowledge of how manage projects from start to finish. She enjoyed working in the multi-family world as each development had a variety of spaces and its own personality. Katy helped design tenant units, leasing offices, fitness centers, business centers, resident lounges, and other amenity spaces. She enjoyed working with the developer to encompass the brand to help target the market they were after and partnering with the contractor and design consultants to bring each project to life.

Here at Haley Ward, Katy works on wide variety of projects and creates concept designs and finish presentations, pulls together construction documents, and is involved in construction administration. Katy coordinates heavily with other disciplines in the office, such as architecture, structural, and MEP engineering. “I love the constant collaboration that happens within my job. I get to talk to everyone involved in the project and am constantly learning from others. This pushes me to expand my knowledge base and allows me to provide a better, more thorough experience to our clients.” When asked what she loves most about working at Haley Ward, Katy mentioned that along with the collaboration, she loves the open, supportive work environment. “When you feel comfortable with the people you work with and know that help is there if you need it, it really encourages growth and development.”

When not working, Katy enjoys reading and spending time with her husband Nathan, and their four-year-old son, Aidan. Since they are still relatively new to Maine, they are frequently out exploring new areas in Maine, enjoying the history of New England, and especially trying new restaurants and cuisines.
