Laser Scanning as Insurance

BIM For Risk Management

Laser Scanning as Insurance

Your building and its contents represent years of effort and investment.  Walls, doors, boilers, machinery, inventory…each element was procured over time with cost. .

Now imagine losing it all in an instant.

Yikes.

Fire? Hurricanes? Earthquakes? Explosions? Train Derailments, Floods? Disasters like these are no longer rare occurrences. Across the country, each region facing its own growing risk.

Are you prepared? Do you have an itemized list ready to hand over to your insurance company in the event a catastrophic claim needs to be made? One that lists every item that will need to be replaced in the event of the loss?  If not, you’re not alone. Few do. Why? Because manually compiling this data is a daunting and time-consuming task. Fortunately, we have the technology to help.

LiDAR: ‘Light Detection and Ranging’; commonly referred to as laser scanning. Laser scanning can be an efficient tool to capture a snapshot-in-time of visual/dimensional aspects of your building, including its contents. Individual scans are registered to create one contiguous point cloud, which can be viewed and used within various viewing/design software packages.

Anything that is seen by the eye can be recorded by a laser scan. The additional benefit is that it can also capture dimensional and greyscale/color data. For example: building heights/lengths/volume, walls/doors/windows, desks/equipment/vehicles, warehouse inventory, etc. If it can be seen in the 360⁰ scan, it will be measured. You can remove ceiling tiles and even capture expensive HVAC and electrical equipment. The best part is that this data is digital and can be stored offsite or duplicated and up to the cloud, furthering the viability of your insurance claim.

If your building is destroyed, you can quantify, measure, and have photographic evidence showing what your building was and contained on a certain date. If you’ve already carried the expense of insurance, you should highly consider documenting your contents so that you can make the rebuilding process as smooth as possible.

Disaster may be unpredictable, but preparedness doesn’t have to be. With the right tools and support, creating a detailed inventory and safeguarding your assets is more manageable than ever. At Haley Ward, Inc. there are experts in laser scanning and related BIM technology/workflows. These tools can help you document your facility and its contents with precision and accuracy.
