Cody Lyons, PE- Creating The Future

Engineers Week February 19-25, 2023

Meet Haley Ward Project Engineer, Cody Lyons, PE.

Even as a kid, Cody knew he wanted to work in engineering. While in high school, he was able to get a job working at the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC), an interdisciplinary center for research focused on material sciences, advanced manufacturing, and engineering of composites and structures. While there, Cody was able to gain valuable, hands-on experience that helped him learn about all the different engineering disciplines and provide him a better understand of what he wanted to do with his future.

After graduating from the University of Maine in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Cody, a native of Glenburn, Maine, knew he wanted to remain in the Bangor area, and Haley Ward was an obvious choice. Here, Cody was able to come in and immediately begin focusing on structural engineering, which is what he enjoys the most. While at Haley Ward, Cody has been able to work on a wide variety of projects that have given him the opportunity to grow and develop professionally.  Cody says, “It’s really cool to drive around and be able to see some of the buildings you’ve worked on and know you’re helping to contribute positively to the community”.

Cody’s favorite project to date was the Maine Army Guard Northern Maine Readiness Center in Presque Isle, Maine. The project, to which Haley Ward provided construction administration services, and lasted roughly two and a half years, allowed Cody the opportunity to observe all components of the design and building process from start to finish.

When asked what advice Cody would give to those interested in an engineering career, Cody said “Definitely find an internship, job shadow, and talk with someone who is an engineer. A lot of people don’t really know the differences between the different disciplines. Spending a day job shadowing and seeing what an engineer does can give you a lot better picture of what you want to do.”

This year Cody won Haley Ward’s most prestigious employee award, The Pinnacle Award. Cody was selected for this honor because he regularly goes above and beyond, and exemplifies all our values of accountability, responsiveness, stewardship, collaboration, prudence, and empowerment.  We are proud of Cody and all he’s accomplished so far, and we are looking forward to seeing what he does next.

In his free time, Cody enjoys photography, and spends a lot of time traveling around the state taking amazing photos. Check out some of the photos from his adventures below!
