River City Athletics Quirk Sportplex

Hampden, Maine

site plan, athletic field, civil engineering

Project Scope

The River City Athletics Quirk Sportplex is a multi-phase recreational development created to expand access to year-round athletic facilities in the greater Bangor, Maine region. Developed by River City Athletics, the project responds to a growing need for high-quality indoor and outdoor space for athletes of all ages and skill levels.

River City Athletics previously operated out of a leased indoor facility but identified a long-term need for a permanent home. Their vision was to develop a dedicated complex featuring both sports turf and natural grass outdoor fields, along with an indoor dome, to support consistent year-round programming despite Maine’s seasonal climate.

As part of early planning, multiple sites were evaluated to determine the best fit for the project. After reviewing constraints, access, and long-term potential, a site in Hampden was selected as the preferred location.

At the Hampden site, Haley Ward is providing an array of services including civil engineering site design, environmental permitting and wetland delineation, architectural design, and structural engineering services. A key feature of the indoor facility will be a mezzanine structure within the dome, designed to support both functionality and spectator use.

The development is being completed in phases. Phase 1 includes the design and permitting of the first outdoor field, which is currently under construction and nearing completion. Phases 2 and 3 will move forward together and include the indoor dome and two additional outdoor fields. The current goal is to have the dome constructed in time for the upcoming winter season.

Naturally flat terrain would be ideal for a development of this scale; however, the existing grade changes across the site, coupled with the presence of extensive wetlands, have presented unique design and construction challenges. The project requires significant earthwork to create level, playable surfaces, along with careful planning and coordination to address environmental constraints and meet regulatory requirements.

Once complete, the River City Athletics Quirk Sportplex will provide a dedicated space for year-round athletics and serve as a major recreational asset for the region.
