Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum

Project Scope
The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum on Sanibel Island has grown from a $10,000 bequest to a national museum that shares passion for shells and the animals that create them with visitors. Haley Ward was selected to assist with the redevelopment of the site to construct a new section devoted to live mollusks.
DESIGN TO REDUCE PERMITTING TIME
Through the civil redevelopment design process, our team optimizing the efficiency of the parking layout, reducing its footprint by 10%, eliminated the need to get a time-consuming variance for exceeding the allowed developed area and freeing up space for the potential of future expansion. During this process, we brought the parking areas up to code requirements and ADA standards, as well as coordinating the site design with the proposed renovated building access, and stormwater management requirements.
Our team optimized the parking and roundabout drop-off to limit coverage, facilitate traffic movement, and provide the required landscaping areas to meet current code requirements. The redevelopment improved maintenance access to the south side of the building and doubled the bicycle parking area.
